Loving open mats!

I feel pretty blessed to be going to the school I’m going to. I feel I’m learning just as much during open mats, rolling with higher belts and fellow white belts, as I do during traditional classes. Every single class I feel progress. Yesterday it was open mat. Teacher was out of town and most…

2 or 3 months… onward

I’m actually feeling pretty good about Jiu Jitsu! Is that a weird thing to say? I must admit, as much as I went on and on with my SO and others about if before doing it, a secret piece of me was unsure about this choice. What am I doing at my age getting into…

Week 7: Finally…

Took about 3 weeks to complete a full week. Ugh. But it ended on a high note at least. First week ended with a bad night due to asthma flaring up. Then 2nd week I was grieving the loss of Amanda in the Oakland Ghost-Ship fire and only made it to the Thursday class. I…

Week 6: Not much to say about BJJ…

I signed up for a year. Awesome. Sadly my circle of friends experienced a tragedy today I’m not going to write about here. So my notes are short. I went, I trained, I will return. That is all.

5 Stages of Jiu Jitsu Competency

Just a link to a great blog post I found this morning… link: The Five Stages of Jiu Jitsu Competency BJJ After 40 is a great resource btw.

Sprained finger, then ankle :(

Well so it goes… took a week off to nurse a sprained finger and then a slightly sprained ankle at work. Bummer. Back to the mats tomorrow. I hate losing momentum! BOOOOOO! I got some athletic tape and learned how to wrap fingers, so I should be good to go.

Week 5: Cross-collar choke success!

Way back years ago I was never able to sub anybody. 5 weeks in for this go-around, and I’m now able to find some success. Feels good! Monday when I didn’t go to class, Mr. TheOldLady showed me how to drive your first straight down to the floor into the collar from mount to setup…

Week 4: and more subs!

Allright so second Saturday open mat came around and I subbed again! More triangles (sloppy but they still worked) and a few Americanas. I can do this! Though technically I am now into week 5, I took yesterday (Monday) off due to a nagging neck/shoulder knot that was bad enough I felt like I may…

Caging the Hips

Great video where Stephen Kesting shows lessons on caging your opponents hips while inside his/her guard to prevent lateral movement, how to use a light “false-grip” to defend against armbar while controlling his/her hip (leading to a stacking or smashing guard pass), caging the hips in the air to follow or prevent their movement, caging…

Overheard a black belt…

…say to a blue belt about how his game will make improvements when he learns to relax and allow the moves to complete, even if you are “losing” that particular move. He said it’s going to be within the flow of jiu jitsu, that you learn about movements and sequences. What the black belt described,…
